New camera & kitty outtakes

Thanks to the generosity of Wal-mart I was one of ten teachers at my school who received a $100 gift card. We decided earlier this year that we needed to upgrade to a new camera since the one we have been currently using is the one we bought before our honeymoon 4+ years ago. Now the decision was clear to go buy our camera at Wal-mart.

Since I have just wonderful taste, the camera I picked out was out of stock at the store we were in. My wonderful hubby looked online, called stores and tracked down a place where we could pick up the model of camera I wanted. Lucky me.

I've been busy with work and today was my first time to take it out and get to shoot with it. We usually send a Christmas picture each year to our extended families. Last year, we included Swarley in the picture with us, which took quite a bit of effort. This year we decided to include her, but not in the same picture as us.

Here are some outtakes from today's photo shoot with the kitty.

continuous learning calendar

This is the first year for my school district to begin a continuous learning calendar, also known as year round school. We began August first which was when the temperature outside was still 100+ degrees. This was rough for classrooms where the air conditioning was not working properly, but fortunately my classroom was nice and cool.

Last month we had our first two week break for fall break which was formerly two days. I was able to take care of some necessary things like changing the oil in my car and buying the tags for our vehicles.

One day I went to the zoo with my mom and my two nieces. I finally go to see the baby elephant at our zoo and some tiger cubs.

On one of the weekends I went down to Grapevine, TX with one of my coworkers and my cousin. We went to the outlet mall, took a mini wine tour on main street and shopped at the shops along the way.

So far I am liking this continuous learning calendar thing. Our Thanksgiving break is the same, it will be Wednesday-Friday. After Thanksgiving we go back to school for ten days and then we get three weeks off for Christmas. Not too shabby.

You won't Belize this (cont'd)

My favorite parts of our trip were enjoying the beach and eating fresh (well fresher than here in Oklahoma) sea food. I think I ate some kind of sea food each night at dinner.

Our trip actually fell on the town's annual Lobster Fest weekend.
Sunday night in the main part of San Pedro they had a big party. There was live music and lots of food vendors came out to sell their lobster inspired dishes. We had lobster pizza, lobster wraps, and fried jalapeno w/lobster inside.

Lobster Fest

We also went out on a boat one morning to go fishing. Our boat captain has fished on this island for over 45 years and he knew exactly where to take us. Mostly Bob and his Dad fished while his mom and I watched. They were having such an easy time I thought I would join in as well.

After fishing all morning we decided to take some of the fish back to cook for ourselves. Our boat captain took care of the messy work for us.

Then some seagulls got really interested in what was going on inside our boat.

So he fed them a snack.

Then we had a nice lunch.

It was some of tastiest fish I have ever eaten. You cannot get fresher than that!

You won't Belize this

We got to take a trip to Belize with Bob's parent's last week.

Here is some background info on where we went in Belize. Belize is the northern most central American country and our resort was on the island of San Pedro which is northeast of Belize city.

Our flight from Houston landed in Belize City and then we got on another (tiny)plane for a short 15 minute flight to the island of San Pedro.

Once that plane landed we then took a taxi ride to a boat dock to wait for a boat to take us up the island to our resort CoCo Beach.

That's just how we got there. More to come about our trip!

since you've been gone

Two weeks ago I said goodbye to my fifth graders. I have been teaching them for two years and it was a little sad to see them go. I guess I am kind of attached to them. I took their picture on their awards day.

Since school has been out I have been one busy gal. My first weekend off I got to see a zebra, and no it was not at the zoo.

June first my hubby took me to Grapevine, TX. We did some wine tasting and got to enjoy some of the stores at the Grapevine Mills outlet mall.

On Saturday we got to go up to Tulsa to see a pharmacy friend get married. Here we are enjoying the reception on top of the Bank of America building.

Tulsa I hate the construction on your roadways, but we had a good time there in T-town.

So far, not a bad summer. We have hit the ground running and we'll be busy until hubby starts his rotations on July 1st. I'll try to keep this thing updated between here and there.

going to the chapel

And they're, gonna get married...

Well, actually it'll be at the country club.

This Saturday Bob's sister is getting married in Hot Springs, AR.

We're are so excited for them. Here's a pic of the happy couple.

At the end of Spring Break I was able to attend one of her wedding showers in Houston with some ladies from her mom's church.

We took this picture before we went.

This will be a big weekend for us. We'll get to leave Friday morning and spend some time with lots of family and friends. Looking forward to making some memories.

the best and the worst

We are making up our parent teacher conferences right now because of the snow last month which caused us to miss several days of school. I enjoy talking to the parents of my students. I repeatedly hear phrases like this "My son/daughter adores you." "My child talks about you a lot." All of which are wonderful things to hear, but very typical. Of course their children are going to like me (that is one of my goals). If they don't like their teacher, they probably won't like school either. Of course they are going to talk about me, they are around me for almost more than half the time they are awake.

Then, on Thursday I speak with another parent, and what was said is still tugging on my heart. I have had her son in my room almost two months now. He moved in from another school after Christmas break. The first day I had him I was on the verge of panic. He was very outspoken and behaving in ways that were interrupting our classroom. I have worked so hard getting my 28 students where I want them and I was not going to have one person undo all of this. From somewhere I pulled out all of the patience in the world for this student, and somehow it worked, and he responded to me very well. (Thank you God).

I could see this parent was quite anxious coming in. She was waiting to hear all the bad things about her son. She point blank asks me if he was bad in my class. My answer was no. This woman's face was full of relief and shock. She asked me if he did his work because at his other school he would just shove it in his desk. Again I surprised her by telling her, yes your son does his work. She tells me she dreads coming to conferences because they always tell her all the bad things about her son.

I also told her I can tell he has had a hard time in the past, but I am working with him and he is responding very well to me. The woman was still shocked, but no longer in disbelief. I did caution her that even though he is doing very well for me, I could see him getting into trouble again next year in middle school, but I will continue to work with him this year to help him with that.

She leaves and is still visibly full of happiness and relief. Now I am sitting in my classroom full of mixed emotions. I am thinking things like "Score for me. Best teacher ever! I am so good with kids." Then I am full of sadness for this woman. Her child has been in school for more than five years and she expects to hear all of the bad things about him at conference night? What kinds of teachers has he had? That goes completely against everything I have been taught about working with parents and students.

Actually, I was at a workshop earlier that day and we were asked this incredibly typical teacher workshop question, "How have you impacted someone's life...this week." Well, now that I had that conference with that parent, I have a better answer to that question.

That is my profession in a nutshell. Even the big "wins" I have are coated in sadness. Yea for me! But how incredibly sad for this parent and child. My best successes sometimes come from the worst situations. However, I must continue on.

Happy Snow Day/Birthday!

Lucky me! I have celebrated my birthday two years in a row now with a snow day, meaning a day off from work.

It has been a glorious day of eating and relaxing. Often when I am browsing my facebook on days like this, I see people post about how they are bored. My advice to them is to make sure you marry your best friend. We have so much fun on days like this. With it being my birthday and all, my wonderful hubby has made me souffles for breakfast and pepperoni rolls for lunch, and there are also birthday cookies on the agenda.

I am a very blessed lady.
